He is survived by his wife, Helen; his two children Becky Hartman and her husband Blaine of Ithaca, Michigan, and Brad Boyer and his wife Stacy of Independence, Kansas. He has seven grandchildren; Autumn, Maggie, Bethany, Keegan, Caleb (who preceded him in death), Seth, and Quinlan. He has eight great-grandchildren; Blake, Brody, Patton, Cora, Mabel, Everett, Blythe, and Riley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Oma Maggie (O’Dell), and his eight brothers and sisters; Harold, Johnny, Victor, Lucille, Lorene, Richard, Rosemary, and Jimmy.

Wendell and Helen were united in marriage on November 20th, 1954 in Independence, Kansas, and spent 68 wonderful years together. They enjoyed many vacations during that time throughout the United States and around the world. He enjoyed spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren. He left us with so many memories that we will always cherish and have a good laugh.

He served in the United States Army and is a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the 7th cavalry and received two purple hearts, and was a prisoner of war.

After the war, Wendell attended and received an associate's degree from Independence Community College in Independence, KS. He then went to work for Kansas Gas & Electric as a lineman and retired after 30 years of service on November 1, 1990.

He will be remembered for his mischievousness, his love of a good steak, chasing squirrels, and as a great storyteller, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

In lieu of a funeral service, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital online at giftfunds.stjude.org/wendellcharlesboyer or mailed to:

I spent so much time with the Hartman family growing up, I was an honorary 5th child! I was welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Boyer with open arms just as Maggie and Bethany were. It was so wonderful to have an additional set of grandparents in town. I will forever remember playing with Trolls in their living room, having snacks at the kitchen table, and listening to stories about the people in the pictures in the front room. Love to the entire Hartman family.

Wendy has and will be missed by a lot of his past coworkers. He always made your day go by fast due to making sure you stayed on top of things! I truly learned a lot from him while working with him. No matter where you were he always made great memories and stories to share with all. Wendy, you have been a great friend. Now that my career has come to retirement as being a lineman, one thing I can say is I have and will never regret being friends with Wendy! God bless you and your wonderful Family!

My heart feels the same sorrow as all the family, but yet we must feel the great pleasure and memories of knowing Wendy. Wendy was a inspiration to all who knew him. Especially those of us who was lucky enough to work with him! What a Lineman and teacher of the trade. Rest in peace โ€œBig Dogโ€ !!!!
